Sharon Carr papers, 1981-1991.

The collection consists of papers of Sharon Carr from 1967-1990. Series (1) primarily consists of typescripts of poems and a small number of holograph poems written by Carr while terminally ill. It includes personal correspondence to her parents and to Floyd C. Watkins; diaries Carr kept in high school and college; and miscellaneous memorabilia. Series (2) consists of materials relating to the publication of Carr's book, YET LIFE WAS A TRIUMPH, a collection of poetry which documents Carr's courage and religious faith. The series includes correspondence with Emory professors Floyd C. Watkins, David R. Blumenthal, and Walter L. Reed, who encouraged her scholarship and literary career and various publishers. Series (3) contains clippings relating to Carr and her work.

Floyd C. Watkins was born 19 April 1920, and grew up in Ball Ground, Ga. He attended Georgia Southern College (B.S., 1946), Emory University (M.A., 1947), and Vanderbilt University (Ph. D., 1952). Watkins began his teaching career at Emory in 1949, and was named Charles Howard Candler Professor of American Literature.
